The Silhouette Cameo is an electronic cutting tool for personal use. Like a home printer, it plugs into your PC or Mac with a simple USB cable. However, rather of printing it uses a little blade to cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and more up to 12-inch wide and 10-feet long. The machine also boasts a quiet motor and the capacity to register and cut printed materials.

379 of 381 people found the following review helpful.
Silhouette Cameo versus Cricut Expression 2
By P. Schmidt
I am writing this review from the perspective of a comparison between the Cricut Expression 2 and the Silhouette Cameo. My review is also approaching the application of these machines from a more industrial perspective, NOT from an arts & crafts perspective. In other words, what applications can inexpensive computer-controlled cutting machines be put to outside of the usual arts & crafts world, and how do the two most popular machines of that type compare in those divergent applications?

By Arts & Crafts, I am referring to applications that involve the usual ‘hearts, flowers, puppy dogs, cupcakes’ shape cutting. By Industrial, I am referring to other tasks such as cutting stencils for spray painting numbers on shipping crates, cutting gaskets, cutting of labels and industrial markers, cutting picture frame masks, and so on.

NEW*** I have placed a short demo video on YouTube under the title “Silhouette Cameo Design Demonstration”, URL is [...]

I have obtained and used both machines during the same time period. I have had extensive communications with both manufacturers, both in pre-sales discussions and in post-sales customer/technical support. If I mention a feature of a product here, it is one that I have used and verified personally. If I mention a limitation of a product, it is one that I have experienced personally AND also discussed with the manufacturer to see if I was missing something and/or if there was a work-around or alternative way of achieving the goal.

Both machines will cut out shapes from sheets of flat materials under computerized control. Both machines are very similar in design and layout, and both work in the same mechanical fashion. Both machines are about the same size and can cut shapes from similar sized pieces of raw material. Both machines use a tiny metal knife that is moved up and down under computer control, while the knife holder moves sideways and the material moves front and back. Both machines use a knife blade that swivels so that it always cuts regardless of the direction the material is moving relative to the knife itself.

Other than these similarities, there are significant differences in the philosophy between the two products. Henceforth in this review I will refer to the Cricut Expression 2 as the “Cricut” and the Silhouette Cameo as the “Cameo”.

The Cricut is fundamentally designed to provide a wide range of predefined symbols and symbol sets from which the user can select and assemble the desired craft projects. It does this without the need for any additional equipment, and specifically the user does not need to have a personal computer or have any knowledge of software or computers. It is the more portable of the two products because you can pick it up and take it to another location easily without the need to lug along a personal computer (or have a personal computer in the new location). The Cricut is self-sufficient.

The Cameo is fundamentally designed to act exactly as an inkjet or laser printer does when connected to a personal computer; it is in effect a computer printer that produces patterns by cutting them from material as opposed to producing them by putting ink or toner on material. Without a personal computer, it cannot be used to design shapes or patterns. Its user must be able to learn and use computer software, the same as learning other software such as word processors, photo editing, web browser, page layout, and other popular applications. The Cameo is not self sufficient. HOWEVER, once a design(s) is done using the computer software, you can save the design to an SD memory card (such as are used in most digital cameras), then plug the SD card into a slot on the Cameo. At point the Cameo can be disconnected from the computer, taken elsewhere, and the cutting can be done in any location. However, I have not personally verified this SD card printing feature.

The Cricut does not allow the user to create shapes from scratch. You must find a suitable shape, or group of shapes, from within the huge library of predefined symbols that is spread across a large number of Cricut cartridges. It is possible to ‘weld’ different shapes together and this offers some flexibility, but ultimately the shapes must originate in the cartridges. When the user has a specific shape in mind and cannot alter it to suit what can be found in the cartridges, it can become quite frustrating. In the task of trying to assemble the designed custom shape, the user might have to purchase several cartridges, and they are not cheap. It is also quite possible that the desired shape cannot be cut at all.

The Cameo allows the user to create shapes from scratch. There are no cartridges at all. If the user does not wish to design their own shapes, there is also an extensive library of online shapes designed by other users. Cameo does not limit where the shapes come from, but does offer a great many from their own online library at 99 cents per shape. The user can buy only the shape, or shapes, desired and he/she does not need to buy an expensive cartridge only to get a single shape from it. Instead of purchasing shapes designed by others, the user can draw any desired shape using the computer software, and can offer it to others for use.

The Cricut has a nice display, consisting of a color LCD screen with touch sensitive surface. All the operations can be performed by touching the screen, or for more precise selections a plastic stylus is included. Once a given cartridge is plugged into the Cricut, all of its shapes can be viewed on the screen as tiny thumbnail images, and the desired shapes can be selected to a queue, from which they can be dragged to a virtual cutting mat, showing where they will appear on the material to be cut. Any shape can be selected, enlarged, and re-sized.

The Cameo has a small simple display like a calculator’s or that of an older cell phone. It displays only one color and shows only text. It is used for diagnostics and for messages like “Load the material” and “Unload the material”. It can also be used to initiate printing based on design(s) stored on an SD card, as previously mentioned. All other operations are done using the included computer software, using the computer’s keyboard, mouse and screen.

The Cricut can be used, optionally, with the free Craft Room software on a personal computer. This software must be downloaded from the Cricut website; it is not included with the machine. The software includes a library of all currently known cartridges, and allows the user to assemble a complete cutting session before the actual cartridges needed have been purchased. The Craft Room software will not function unless the computer is currently online with Cricut; this is important, since it means that you must have an internet connection anywhere that you want to use the Cricut in conjunction with the Craft Room software. The Craft Room does not allow the user to design their shapes, but it does provide a more user-friendly interface for the Cricut, since more tools and objects can be viewed on the larger computer screen.

The Cameo must be used with the included Studio software; this comes on a CD-ROM in the box with the machine. For a fee of about $50, it will upgrade itself to the more advanced Designer Edition. The main advantages of the Designer Edition are the ability to import a wider range of graphics from other programs. Both the regular version and the Designer Edition allow the same design and cutting functionality, so for most people there is no need to buy the Designer Edition. The Cameo’s software only needs to be online with the Silhouette website when you wish to purchase shapes from their library, or when you wish to do an upgrade to a newer version. Otherwise, the software works without the need for an internet connection.

The Cricut includes a white LED headlight next to the blade, so you can see what it is cutting as it does so. The Cameo does not have such a light.

Both machines use cutting mats, which are clear plastic sheets with a special adhesive on the top surface to make it a bit tacky. This holds the material to be cut so that it does not slide around during cuttings. The mats wear out due to wear from the blades cutting through into them, and from the adhesive wearing out.

Both machines use blades that attach to a tool holder on the machines. The Cricut uses tiny blades that fit into a blade holder, while the Cameo requires the user to replace the blade holder when the blade wears out; this makes the Cameo blades a bit more expensive, but on the other hand it is much easier to handle the larger blade holder than it is handling the tiny (and sharp!) Cricut blades. The Cricut blade depth can be adjusted while the blade holder is attached to the machine, whereas the Cameo blade holder must be removed from the machine in order to change blade depth. Both machines seem to cut equally well.

The Cricut is not intended to make its cuts on specific areas of the mat (you can get close, though, using the Craft Room software). The Cameo allows very precise cuts relative to the material, so you can specify that a shape be cut starting 1/2″, for example, from the edge of the material.

The Cricut is not intended for cutting out pre-printed materials; it is intended to cut out shapes in different materials (of materials of different colors) that can be later assembled to form a multi-colored overall shape.

The Cameo is not a printer, but it does allow importing and designing shapes in any desired color or combination of colors. Then it will send the image to the printer of your choice, printing on the material to be cut; this is limited only by the ability of your printer (e.g. inkjet printers ate usually limited to printing on various papers, while laser printers, both black & white and color models, can print on paper as well as a variety of plastics). I would like to point out that 3M (the makers of Scotch tape and Post-Its) have a wonderful product called “Print To Last” paper, which is an almost indestructible paper-like plastic material designed for laser printers; it is very useful for crafts and industrial applications. Both the Silhouette tech support folks and I have verified the the Cameo will nicely cut this material using the ‘Transparency’ cut settings (and I fully expect that the Cricut can cut it too, but have not tried it). The Cameo software will print registration marks on the printed sheet, and when the printed sheet is then loaded into the Cameo machine, it uses an electric eye to scan for the registration marks, and will synchronize and align the cutting with the pre-printed images. This allows an infinite number of printed images and cut shapes to be made. The synchronized cuts are very accurate, matching the desired printed images. The user can specify where the cuts are to be made relative to the printed shapes, or the software can automatically figure it out. This even applies to graphical objects imported into the Cameo software, as opposed to being designed in that software.

The Cricut requires that all text come from the cartridges, so the user is very limited in regards to available fonts. The Cameo software can use any True Type font that is installed on the computer, which means pretty much all fonts available to other Windows applications, and of course you can download any font you want from the internet. Since none of the Cricut cartridges include a ‘stencil’ style font, you cannot easily use it to cut stencils for painting signs and such.

I find that overall, the Cricut is probably a better choice for people interested simply in arts & crafts projects, or for people who don’t have or don’t care to use a personal computer. I find that the Cameo is better for people who are prepared to use a personal computer and who desire complete freedom in what shapes they cut.

I have noticed that most crafts stores, such as JoAnn’s, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, etc; carry the Cricut Machines and their supplies; I rarely see many cartridges sold in the stores though. Unfortunately, these same stores carry little or no Silhouette supplies. It seems that different chains carry the Silhouette. This may be marketing pressure placed on the stores by the one or both manufacturers. I have read that Cricut blades and cutting mats can be used with the Cameo, but have not experimented with this; some alterations may be needed. But in any case, Supplies for the Silhouette products are widely and readily available online.

Finally, I have found that emails to Cricut take four to fives days before a reply arrives, whereas emails to the Cameo folks are answered almost immediately, and with real and useful responses (and you are talking to people who apparently actually work at Silhouette, not some contracted call center where people read from scripts). I have found that phone calls to Cricut require long waits on hold (typically 20 to 30 minutes) and then often the person answering the phone does not know the answer and transfers me to another group of tech support people, with another long wait. Every time I have called the Cameo folks, I have gotten through very quickly. Most importantly, it seems that Cricut support people either know the software or they know the machine, but not both. The Cameo folks seem to know both the software and the machine, since they must be used together. My experiences with the Cricut software included issues with getting the software to recognize the machine, whereas in my experience, the Cameo software was more bullet proof and installed easily and recognized the machine every time without trouble.

My Wife is like a kid in a candy store. She is extremely pleased with this cutter. For $280 this machine really cannot be beat.

The software that comes with the Cameo is top notch. Letting you use all of your own fonts and import your own clipart and photos. There is even a online store that lets you purchase designs for $.99. And they give you a $10 gift card for the store in the box as well. If you can use your “Print Screen” button on the computer and a simple photo editor, the possibilites are endless even without purchasing designs from the store.

The speed and level of detail this machine can cut is very impressive. Very simple to operate as well.

The only advantage I could see for the Cricut, is the ability to make stuff without a PC. Other than that, why waste all of that money on expensive cartridges. There used to be a couple of software companies that made design software like Make-The-Cut that allowed you to use a cricut with a PC. However, Cricut recently sued the companies who make this software and you can no longer get either of them, forcing you to use cartridges.

Silhouette CAMEO is the clear winner.

In olden times quill pens made from bird feathers were all the rage, and were the necessary writing instrument for numerous centuries. When the Industrial Revolution beckoned, a more and more more refined technology developed bettered writing tools, like the fountain pen for instance. The necessary contemporary categories of pens may be classified by the sort of writing tip or point. Let us look at the more popular writing paraphernalia available in the market today, and likewise at writing instruments applied in the past.

•	Ballpoint pen – Usually has tungsten carbide, steel or brass finishing. A ballpoint pen commonly measures among 0.7 to 1.2 millimeters and works by meting out thick oil based ink by navigating a minute hard orb. Ballpoint pens are very usual because the ink without any delay dries upon contact with paper, plus, they are inexpensive and have a long life span. This type of pen is employed in schools, colleges, universities and offices.

•	Rollerball pen – In the beginning, the rollerball pen was crafted to merge the expediency of a ballpoint pen with the silky “wet ink” outcome affiliated with the fountain pen. A rollerball pen’s ink is ordinarily water-based which is then disseminated through a ball tip akin to a ballpoint pen. Because the ink is less thick and has a higher absorbance quality, this writing apparatus glides with no problems or difficulties throughout paper or other writing materials.

•	Fountain pen – The writing instrument choice of the distinguished and elite, it likewise has a water-based ink liquid which is then transported to a nib. From then on, the ink floods from a basin or tank, thanks to the ingenuity of combined gravity and capillary action. It is interesting to note that fountain pens do not possess any mobile components. Instead, ink is passed around by way of a slim opening to the intended writing area. There are 2 types of fountain pen basins – refillable or disposable. The latter is known as an ink cartridge. Refillable fountain pens integrate widgets such as pistons to get ink from a container through the nib, or in galore cases, the ink may be refilled using an eyedropper.

•	Felt-tip pen – This instrument, also widely called a marker, has a permeable tip made from a rubbery substance. Felt-tip pens come in respective sizes, with the smallest mainly applied to write on paper. The larger version is what we commonly use to mark cartons, chalkboards and whiteboards. The medium sized markers are standard with the much younger set, applied for art purposes.

There are 3 kinds of pens employed in times of yore and not universally employed, even though in a heap of constituents of the world, they may be applied sparingly.

•	Dip pen – Also known as the nib pen, it is rather similar to the fountain pen, and has a metal nib with vessels. A dip pen is normally located on a lever or receptacle made from wood. The drawback of the nib pen is that it ought to be oftentimes dipped into an ink container for repeated use. Nowadays, the nib pen is applied principally for art and design purposes, such as comics and calligraphy.

•	Reed pen – This pen has closely departed the writing world, except for minor use for school children in remote parts of Pakistan, said to fabricate handwriting skills. Reed pens are made out of bamboos and reed, with an opening in a tapered tip.

•	Quill pen – Made from feathers of birds like geese and eagles. A quill pen was one of the basi writing instruments used, after the reed pen. The mechanism consisted of a shaft which operated as an ink basin, and the ink is disseminated right to the tip thru a passageway.

The art of calligraphy is now available to all! The Parallel Pen is the introductory fountain pen that allows you to effortlessly switch among thick and thin strokes, and to blend inks for a distinctive look. Nib width is 3.8MM, the thinnest of the Parallel Pen line. Each pen comes with a IC-P3 ink cartridge.

All of the pens in the series have a wonderful shape, weight, and balance in the hand, and write wonderfully with no scratchiness and perfect ink flow. The pen also comes packed with goodies, which look like even more of gift when you consider the low price and the quality and reliability of these products.

This 3.8 mm size version puts down a very hearty line that’s too large for everyday use, but there are other sizes in the series. They’re relatively inexpensive compared with other calligraphy pens and are far superior to any other calligraphy pens I’ve tried (and trust me – I’ve tried a lot). I’d even pick the Parallel line over Pelikan’s (another legendary fountain pen brand which is my favorite pen brand overall) Script series, which are also calligraphy pens, but don’t have the advantage of the double plate nib that the Parallels have.

The single drawback – one that is a result of the design of calligraphy pens with this shape – is that the cap cannot be posted on the end of the pen when you take it off to write.

Summary: If you’re looking for high quality, low price, and trouble free calligraphy pens that will last, do yourself a favor and pick up some of the Pilot Parallel Pens.

To say it is the greatest thing that happened to pens since the “ball-point” would not be an overstatement. (and for the price…Wow!) it will make an amateur seem proficient, Not that i’ve ever been artistically challenged.
PS i speak in general of the technology, keep in mind however that nib size should be considered. for instance this 3.8mm model would not suffice for producing smaller letter sizes. fortunately there are four size’s in all to choose from.

In her opinion, this was the best mat for the price. And, since we are friends and fellow-business owners, she is someone I trust.

The size works well for me (24″ x 36″), and I have cut strips / squares for two quilts now using my mat. In spite of the fact that many of the cuts are in the same location, there is no indication of even a scratch on my mat. The size is also great since I have been able to use it in several different locations to cut my fabric – including a store counter.

While I know many mats will do the same thing, I have only used this one. And, having both the grids and the inches marked on the one side has made it possible for me to accurately measure my fabric. The other side is unmarked for general cutting.

Because of how it has worked for me, I give it five stars.

Cell phone technology has been moving forward at break neck speed, and at times we may not detect it, but think back to just a few years ago and you may see all the new feature integration and race in the marketplace – a race to “wow” buyers and get them to choose a specific device. But before we talk when it comes to the current trends in cell phones and smart phones, let’s talk about the past evolution of these devices.

Since, I had one of the basi mobile “cell” phones – I’d like to tell you a quick story to get started out this discussion.

My firstborn cell phones were state-of-the-art at the time, but if you saw them today, you’d laugh. One of them I in truth kept; a Mitsubishi Transportable. This phone is in regards to the size of a six pack cooler that you might take to your child’s soccer game, and it was rather heavy, as I recall it is well over 10 pounds. This of course included the battery pack to power up to 3 Watt phone.

Remember that Ion-lithium batteries at the time were just coming off the assemblage lines and were rather costly – they did not subsist in this size for anything but NASA and military usage. These initial cell phones I had were nickel hydride powered, rather an inferior battery engineering science for progressed cell phones.

The Mitsubishi Cell Phone has a strap on it so you may carry it like a purse, and I ofttimes felt in truth stupid carrying it, until of course it rang, and I unzipped the top, pulled out the handset on the phone and begun talking. I may recall that every one stared as if I was a mystery CIA agent, was working for MI6, and my name wasn’t Lance, it was genuinely James Bond. You see, at that time not very numerous humans had the cell phones and they were very expensive.

Another one of my primary phones was a Audiovox 1000 model, which was rather big and it was mounted in my car, a car phone – cell phone. The box that ran the Cell Phone was mounted under the seat, and there was a cradle that kept the headset. The headset had a cord on it just like a phone at home, before the cordless phones that is. Under the seat the box was when it comes to 3 1/2 inches high and the size of a laptop with a 17.1 inch screen.

This Cell Phone or car cell phone was wired directly to the battery with a couple of fuses. When I turned on the vehicle, the Cell Phone would mechanically turn on. If I turned off the vehicle, I had to leave it on accessory with the key in the right position, unless I left the phone on which by-passed the ignition. When the phone rang and in truth honked the horn, which got me into trouble a couple of times when the horn went off while I was driving behind a police car stopped at an intersection. I have a lot of stories to tell you regarding all those early days with the original cell phones, and you may e-mail me if you are ever fascinated in such experiences.

Folks today take all this for granted, as they don’t realize how cumbersome the introductory cell phones were, or how stupid they were equated to progressed day smart cell phones. Today they give you a free cell phone when you sign up for service – back then you had to pay $1000 for a car cell phone, and as much as a couple hundred dollars to have it installed. It was rather a procedure, if you have a stereo system, and an XM radio put in your car at the same time, that is with regards to how much work it took to do this. Therefore, at today’s labor rates you could effortlessly recompense three or $400. That’s unquestionably something to think about.

If I was talking to somebody on the phone while the engine was running, if I turned off the car and moved the key to the accessory position I would dump the phone call, as I cut it out for the duration of that transition. However, having a cell phone in my car helped me increase my business. At the time I was only 17 years old – I had an aircraft brokerage firm and aircraft finder’s service and I would work off of fees whenever an aircraft that I represented sold. I likewise had a little aircraft cleaning service and was capable to contact clients from my vehicle on the flight line, and my crews could call me when they were done with the occupation as they would use the local payphone to call me.

Thus, this mobile engineering permitted me to make more money, and stay more effective than the competition. Remember at the time this was leading edge technology, it was state-of-the-art, and I had it – the contest did not. No longer was I stuck in an office, I could run my business from anyplace and it permitted me much freedom. Often people today do not realize what it was like before mobile cell phones. Anyone who is in business now over the age of 50 surely realizes, because they do not forget a time when there were no cell phones.

This was a amount of time in our nation’s history where there were recompense phones in each buying goods center, each gas station, outside of each fast feed restaurant, and persons employed them all the time. Business People who didn’t smoke filled their ashtrays with coins so they may stop and use the pay phone. Thus, permitting them to call clients, customers, vendors, and maintain their operations in the office. When cell phones initial came into play they displaced the old Motorola engineering science of push to talk phones, which worked off a mountaintop repeaters, these phones were very big in the military, construction industry, and all the executives with big corporations had them.

Since this was radio technology, they worked further than the primary cell phones which had to be within 10 to 15 miles of a cell tower. Today, the cell phones are less wattage than they were back then, so the intermediate cell tower is 6 miles or less apart. Back then the cell phones worked off three Watts, and now with 3G engineering the wattage is underneath 1 W. This is in all likelihood good for the humane biosystem, as it is putting less microwave frequency radiation into your brain, there will be less brain tumors, brain cancer, and other issues. There have been a lot of studies including various with the Swiss researchers which seemed to indicate that the 3 W phones were rather unacceptable for humane health, and they would tardily cook your brain as one researcher said.

Luckily, for the cell phone industry they were capable to inter most of these difficultnesses and objections, as well as the studies that the Swiss did. Although, there were studies here in the United States, you would be hard-pressed to find those exploration studies and selective information on brain tumors, brain cancer, and their relation to the cell phones that persons used. In fact, if you go to Google Scholar today you will be hard-pressed to find anything that would suggest that the cell phones could cause such horrid conditions. This of course is all still up for debate, but we try not to talk when it comes to it.

Perhaps, by going to 3G wireless, and lower wattage the mobile cell phone industry dodged a bullet of huge class-action lawsuits, and we may never know the harm we had caused. Nevertheless, as we talk with regards to Six Sigma efficacy in corporations, or using progressed management proficiencies in little businesses, no one may deny that increasing communicating speed and reliability is by far a factor in the increase productivity in the 80s and 90s due to cell phones.

At the time I was in a literal sense running 1000 to 1200 minutes per month and even though that service was much for less than the other selections such as the Iridium Satellite Phones, non-cell phone mobile units, as they did not use cell towers, rather satellites – you may imagine the costs of the original cells. They did not have an unlimited plan and once over your minutes, you salaried the premium for each minute on that cell phone, my bill was commonly $500 to 800 or more.

The other mobile phones at the time were not cell tower-based phones, they were push-to-talk and came in a brief case – it was considered rather James Bond at the time. And this was back in the 1970s, and I do not forget this, because I started my business when I was 12 years old washing airplanes at the local airport. Many of the businessmen who owned corporate jets had these types of phones. They were fundamentally for the rich and famous, and business person. They didn’t work everyplace and you had to have gorgeous much line of sight to the nearest tall mountain, and that mountain had to have a repeater on top of it, which was hardwired into telephone lines, and the rest of the system worked with ground lines.

All this is very interesting, and we ought to consider that a lot of folks today have never been alive when there were no cell phones. They have no clue how hard it was to run a business back in the days when there genuinely was no mobile communication. The same repeater schemes on top of the mountains that Motorola owned or which applied Motorola hardware, also controlled the pagers. These pager schemes were rather ordinary with people on call, such as doctors, and service personnel. Two-way radios, which work basically the same as the two-way push to talk briefcase phones, were employed through a dispatcher for companies very often.

Later, just as cell phones came into play, somebody came up with the idea of 1.5 way and two-way pagers. Instead of a one-way pager, someone who had what they call an “alpha mate” device could page an individual and ask them a question (using a text message) on that page and the recipient could press a button for yes or no, Y. or N. and that selective information would be relayed to the dispatcher. People actually got beauteous good at communicating this way. And you could send text type messages for the user of the pager to read. In reality these were the original text type messages, so the conception of having a mobile device and using text messaging is not all that new.

Two-way text messaging by way of cell phones is merely a re-introduction of that similar technology. Once people had cell phones they didn’t need to use the text pagers anymore, and that technology was leapfrogged as the price of the cell phone services was lower, as contest increased among companies like Sprint and AT&T. There were galore other territorial littler players, but they finally got purchased up by the big boys.

The cell phone industry grew so fast in the late 80s and early 90s, that in the end there was coverage everywhere. Then something actually weird happened, the promise of 3G wireless came into play, and folks started switching to that new system. I may tell you this – my original cell phones were much more powerful and worked much better than the cell phones of today.

Occasionally, I had a call dropped and there were not as numerous service areas, yes there were more dead zones, but the signal was much more powerful because it was 3 W, and since it ran off my car battery or a big battery pack in a little carry case, it had ample power to maintain that strong signal.

Today, when I use my AT&T cell phone, I am often times cursing because the service is so bad, I wonder why I am even paying for it. In fact, the loss of productivity from dead zones, and the cell phone calls dropping, I feel as if AT&T ought to be paying me. Apparently, I am not alone a heap of people feel the same way. Nevertheless, the 4G wireless is on the way and everyone will be switching to that so that they will have Internet access permitting them to do e-mails, twitter, video, and real-time text messaging without the use of ground lines

A good a great deal of folks do not know of a time when there was no email or internet. And most people who are in business today, who are beneath 50 years old do not do not forget a time when we didn’t have fax machines, the reality is that fax machines came into play when it comes to the time of the basi cell phones. Mind you, there was still no Internet, no e-mail, and even though ARPANET was being used by the military, and by think tanks, exploration centers, and top universities, it wasn’t genuinely available to the public in the way we have it now.

Fast forward to today and now no one goes anyplace without a cell phone. Social researchers have noted less people wearing wrist watches. They don’t need a wristwatch because that is a usual feature on all cell phones now. Of course, this doesn’t help companies like Rolex who are catering to the young up-and-coming BMW crowd, if you look around you will see that most young executives don’t even wear a watch and most of our younger generation doesn’t wear a watch either.

It seems that the wrist-watch substituted the pocket watch, and the cell phones seem to be replacing just regarding everything. These days people use their cell phone or smart phones to do their e-mails, and these same phones act like a PDA, no one carries day planners anymore, even though a few people do, myself included perchance out of habit from using a day planner from the time I was 12 years old in my business until I was in my mid-40s. Perhaps, I am giving away my age, but now and again old habits die hard.

Today with numerous laptop notebooks, PDAs, and smart phones, it seems none of that other stuff is needed. Including your humane memory say some psychologists, who argue that this technology is causing the humane brain to rewire itself differently because there are dissimilar needs to get along in the world. After all, all your best friends are on the speed dial and you don’t have to do not forget phone numbers anymore. And all your contacts and info is on your smart phone, in your e-mail program, or on your laptop.

Cyber security analysts worry that if the scheme crashes or God forbid an electro-magnetic pulse, neutron bomb, or nuclear device is set off high in the atmosphere it could destruct all the electronic equipment, including all the cell towers, your laptop, your television, your refrigerator, and your smart phone. Where will you be then, and may you rely on your memory and the brain you are born with to carry on your daily endeavors – scary thinking, but perchance we need to address this as we consider the evolution of cell phones.

Today, our cell phones have changed the entire dynamics of our society. There are unspoken etiquette issues of cell phone use in public. There are rules when we may use our cell phones and when we can’t. Issues such as driving with a cell phone and the number of automati deaths which take place while people are driving and talking on the phone at the same time. There have been major disasters caused by texting while driving a bus or conducting a train.

The reality is that as our technology has evolved, it is evolving much rapidly and without delay than the humane brain may to take it all in. Due to the multitasking required in our society to get along and the high pace and productivity that jobs require, a lot of brains cannot cope or adjust fast enough. And this seems to be a problem, if galore persons are not capable to make the switch, but they try to, once in a while while driving with disastrous results.

Our smart phones are getting super cell phones that have more and more features, such as the capacity to store music like the iPod, and vast amounts of selective information like our electronic PDAs. These appliances are getting more high-tech each and each year and they are feature rich. Many have five to ten gigabytes of selective information storage now. One recent study in the cell phone industry noted that 90% of the persons who own cell phones have never employed all the features, and do not know how to program them, or even that they subsist on their cell phone. Most people don’t even care, they use the features they want and none of the others.

This is a mutual problem with new technologies, and it is something that happened with that Beta and VHS recorders. What’s that old joke, there are tons of features on your video recorder at home, but no one knows how to use them, and before we all learned that we need to learn to use these features, the VHS video recorder is out in the new DVDs are here. Now cable companies offer boxes which may record multiple shows so you may watch later or pause a live TV program while you go to the bathroom, or go to the kitchen to get something to eat. Some grant you to use your cell phone to do remote programming too.

These are all things mutual challenges which are came across and similar troubles with any new personal tech appliances which become mass buyer products. Cell phones and our current smart phones are no exception. It’s hard to say the future what types of new features in our cell phones will have. The sky is the limit, and the imagination and demand for more features and dandier technology is readily apparent. The early adopters of such cell phone and smart phone technologies are more than willing to spend big bucks to have all-in-one devices. Therefore, these trends will continue.

Just to give you an example of a lot of of the crazy ideas persons come up with for future smart phones let me tell you a little quick story.

Our on-line Think Tank came up with a plan to invent a PhD or Personal Health Device, which tracks your diet – on your cell phone. How it worked was rather simple, when you are at the grocery store, you would scan all the items that you bought, and they would go into storage inside your smart phone. Each time you ate one of those items you would merely select what you ate, and punch in the number of servings and you would calculate and keep track of your calories, fat content, and commended each day allowances in the major five feed groups.

The smart phone would have a scanner scheme on it, later subsequent versions of this smart phone and personal health device would be competent to scan productions by way of RFID tags. Your phone could tabulate and even commend what you must eat, how numerous more miles you will have to jog, and what you would need to maintain your diet to meet your personal health goals, and weight loss program. Sounds crazy doesn’t it, yes, it does, but the effort capitalists like the idea. So too, do companies that manufacture high tech smart phones today, as everyone is looking to get a jump on the competition.

GPS schemes by way of smart phones or cellular high-tech phones is rather possible (now available), and you don’t even need satellites to do it. If you are within the realm of assorted cell towers your emplacement may be triangulated rather quickly, which pinpoints your precise emplacement within 10 feet. Ah ha, you see the problem in this too; What with regards to privacy you ask? That’s a good point and that is another issue that persons are rather concerned when it comes to with all this new high-tech personal smart phone innovations.

Google Phone and social networking connections appear to be on horizon. That is to say, linking your smart phone with all of your social networking friends, but apparently Google got into a little bit of a problem and brought up that galore persons are not ready for that just yet. In fact, a good deal of people who are friends on social networks and make connections, have no intention of ever meeting these persons in real life, and consequently they aren’t actually friends. And since you don’t genuinely know anything when it comes to those connections or friends on your social networking site, the last thing you want them to do is know precisely where you are within 10 feet.

That ought to appear to be obvious, and in the future it may not be such a huge deal, but persons are still a little paranoid and they like to have their privacy. Meanwhile, we read more and more articles regarding social networking gone bad. That is to say persons using social networks to stalk other people, and this also worries parents who have teenagers, who use social networks on a each day basis, and a heap of that use them on an every hour basis, and a good numerous who seem to be texting each few minutes.

One recent study of cell phone users was capable to have a 93% predictability of where a person might be based on the patterns determined by their cell phone, and when it was connected to any given local cell tower. The study found that most persons stay within 6 miles of their homes. These patterns of predictability are a reality in our society and how we operate as persons – notwithstanding this brings up all types of issues that have attracted the attention of the Electronic Freedom Foundation, and it also touches on the issue of privacy and paranoia, it catches persons off guard.

Then there is the new trend with smart mobs using their smart phones, and having fun with and meeting up in respective places all at the same time. Although these systems are used for fun, entertainment, and socializing, these same types of smart mobs have the power to destabilize a society or civilization. Consider if you will the use of engineering science in Tiananmen Square – must governments be worried with regards to your smart phone technology, or the future of 4G wireless cell phones? They in all likelihood ought to be concerned with it, exceptionally if it is applied by a alien government to provide mass protests versus what would be a normal stabile government.

In other words it has uses in warfare, the CIA, in bringing down corrupt regimes which are foes to United States. But rest assured – the same thing could occur in the United States where perchance a communist rogue nation state decisive to have protests in the United States in our major cities on Mayday. It could effortlessly take place peculiarly with our own engineering science being employed versus us, due to all the interconnectivity that it offers.

Does this mean that our government has to find a way to turn off all the cell phones in case of something like this happening?

Do they need a device to turn off sure cell phones from the system, while leaving introductory responders cell phones activated for communication?

And what with regards to hackers, which might be competent to send out tens of thousands of phony text messages, or call masses of people into a trap, or stage a riot?

These are all questions we need to answer and we need to grasp that the same technology we construct to improve our productivity, our society, and help us in our each and everyday lives with our families and friends may also be used versus us.

And what happens when our smart phones become smarter than us? Some believe, as I do, that they already have. Most of the smart phones today have artificial intelligence systems within them, for instance a text messaging program which guesstimates which keys you are going to press next or what you are attempting to say and it offers you suggest is so you may fill in the blank. Making your texting very quick. This is very similar engineering that Google uses when doing a search and offer suggestions as you are typing to save you time. This is just one form of artificial intelligence in our smart phones and cell phones today.

There are galore cell phones that concede you to use speech acknowledgement to dial phone numbers, search your databases, or navigate the screens on your cell phone. The most recent smart phones will be capable to tell you when you are in proximity to a Starbucks and then give you GPS directions to find that location. This has big significations for retailers, advertisers, and buyers alike. They will begin to recognise your patterns and habits. All these technologies are available now and we will see them in the near future. Your cell phone will even become a payment device, hooked to your credit card information. All this engineering science exists today.

But what with regards to the technologies which are just over the horizon?

We’ve not long ago seen at Comdex and CES shows the initial generations of projection cell phones, that is to say video group discussion enabled cell phones which concede you to project to the other party onto the nearest wall or onto a table so you may watch. This will evidently be followed by the Holographic cell phones, which were similar to those that we saw in the Star Wars trilogy.

All these things will be available in the next five years, and you will most likely have them if you buy one of the high-tech cell phones in the near future. At original these technologies will cost a lot extra, but those prices will come down as the number of units built goes up and as more Chinese likewise buy their primary cell phone, adding another billion humans who own such devices, accordingly bringing the cost down for everyone – significantly!

By the year 2025 your cell phone will be a brain chip inside of your head, and you may think that you’d like to contact somebody and it will dial the number and contact them. By 2050 you will be competent to do thought transfer thru the little devices, brain implant – perhaps littler than a dime. And humans born after that will never know what time were “thought transfer” did not exist, just like right now there are a heap of persons who have never known a time when mobile phones didn’t exist. And since Moore’s law also seems to apply to the cell phone and smart phone industries we may suppose a size reduction as well as a power reduction to run this technology.

In other words, your biosystem will be competent to power up your brain cell phone chip, just as it does your current humane brain which works on regarding a greatest or most complete or best possible of 20 W. of energy, and you will be competent to have an eyelid screen, so you may close one eye, and surf the Internet. It’s hard to say what the Comdex and CES Show in Las Vegas in the year 2025 will look like, it is probably totally unlikely to pinpoint what these shows will look like in the year 2050. In fact, there may not be shows at all, you may be competent to experience these trade shows in your holographic living room, video gaming center.

Walking the virtual halls of the trade show using your avatar and talking to other avatars explaining all the new technologies that are available for you might be the new reality even though an Augmented or completely Virtual Reality. That appears to be where we are going, though it’s hard to imagine taking into account where we are today. Nevertheless, I may assure you people in the 1950s could not actually have imagined the way in which our smart cell phones have evolved in the present period.

Currently, there seems to be a very huge push in the more prominent cities like Atlanta and Dallas, Los Angeles and Seattle, Boston and New York, Miami and Houston towards the 4G wireless, plainly this will continue. That is the full broadband Internet surfing on your smart phone, the capacity to watch TV while driving in a car on your cell phone. And next comes the capacity to project that TV onto any screen or flat surface that is nearby or available. The engineering science is getting more robust, it’s getting smaller, it’s getting smarter, and you have to determine how far you want to go with it.

Perhaps, I must write a quick eBook on this topic and explain chapter by chapter, the evolution of this adverse communicating technology, and the future of smart phone personal tech devices. Let me know if you know any fascinated potential co-authors.

At the current pace we are moving, and at the speed in which we are interfacing with the Internet, social networks, e-mail, and television, it’s hard to say precisely what you will be carrying around in the future in your purse or pocket, but I daresay it will be something that is veritably incredible, and in the next 10 years it will be scarcely imaginable from this point in time to know incisively what it will be, or what it might be capable to do. I hope you will please consider all this. And contact me if you’d like to talk about this further at the Online Think Tank.

They have paid for themselves over and over again though the years. I am only replacing them now as they have become dull and sticky after years of rough wear and tear. The handle is very confortable. I have had good experiences with Mundial knives and scissors.

I asked the ladies at the cutting counter which scissors they would recommend and the lady was using these and said that they were her favorite. I bought them and have been extremely happy with them ever since. They are fairly light weight and very comfortable to hold. I later bought a pair of Tonic brand scissors Tonic Studios 839 Kushgrip 8-1/2-Inch Left Hand General Purpose Scissors because of their pretty color and cushy grip. They were terrible and wouldn’t even cut through a double layer of knit fabric. I have cut many types of fabrics with these with no problem and many of those were double layered. So, if you’re looking for a good pair or sewing scissors, you should really give these a try. I have these Mundial 1860 scissors in blue, but they are the exact same scissors, just blue instead of red.

They seemed much better when I first bought them-I’ve had them about a year and they don’t seem to work as well. I would recommend them, if they can be sharpened.

Erickson-Sander
I am a paper crafter (not scrapbooker) who uses Mod Podge by the gallon. This stuff can be used for adhesion, sealing, decoupage, and applying dimensional textures to a certain extent. After using Mod Podge for many years, the matte finish in the yellow bottle has become my favorite, although all Mod Podge products are great and come recommended by me. The trick is to know which finish of Mod Podge to use for your needs.

As a paper crafter, I prefer the matte finish because it has the most durable and well textured finish for decoupage and sealing my paper projects. I prefer to use a sponge brush to apply this to my crafts. The glossy and satin formulas can leave sealed projects just ever so slightly tacky to the touch once completely dry. If I use the glossy or satin finish to coat, say, a decoupaged notebook – after letting the finish dry completely I could still stack finished notebooks to store them and they might stick together. So I wouldn’t use those formulas for projects that need more durability and protection. (For another example, I’ll chose matte when I decoupage a surface of furniture, as it might get a lot of wear and items set upon it each day. But for an art project that will merely hang on the wall I’m more likely to chose the glossy or satin.) The matte finish has preformed the best for my decoupage projects. That said, you can always use a clear acrylic spray finish on top of your mod podge to get rid of any remaining “tackiness” no matter which formula you might use.

The matte finish, obviously, has a dull non-shiny appearance once dry. If you would like a shiny finish, choose the gloss Mod Podge finish in the classic red bottle. Then there is the satin finish in the orange (or purple for hard coat) bottle, which has a slight haze in it’s finish and will thus show brush strokes and scratches less often than matte & gloss.

Of course there are also several other Mod Podge products now on the market, as the crafting industry is booming these days and they are broadening their spectrum of products, which is wonderful for us crafters! I recommend any of their formulas, honestly, just research which one best suits your project before purchasing.

Mod Podge is the classic crafting glue, and it’s easy to see why. It spreads evenly, dries quickly, and has great sticking power. This is very handy stuff to have around, and works for a wide variety of craft projects. It dries clear, so can be used as a sealant as well as glue.

I’ve been a crafty gal since I was little, and when I discovered Mod Podge it was all over. With every possible finish, the options are endless. I use the Matte finish when I’m doing collages on canvas. It doesn’t stand out as much against the paint that way. If I want a finished effect, I’d use the glossy.

I like this much better than the hard acrylic blocks that are often sold with clear stamps. This helps line up the paper & stamps with the grid, and allows for even pressure across the stamps.

Note: store the item with the sponge feet not squished, or they will not hold the plate evenly. I keep mine on top of a box, upside down (so the little feet are in the air.)

This product has sponge feet to allow me to press the stamps down onto the paper for beautiful designs. The alignment grid allows for perfect placement of repositionable stamps. I also discovered I was able to lay out the stamps on paper, and press the stamp press onto the stamps and it could pick up the stamps in perfect placement where I had put them. I was able to lay out multiple stamps once and stamp many cards to help out this busy mom! This is a very inventive and useful product that I would highly recommend.

WOW! this takes the guesswork out of wondering whether you have the stamp in the right spot or not as you can clearly see thru the stamp platform. i love the way you get even pressure on the stamped image so there is no more of that darker on one side than the other. i store my stamp press with the foam feet facing the ceiling as others have mentioned and expect to get many years of service out of this little gadget. love it to pieces!
