As a kid, I expended innumerable hours building plastic model kits and have always loved models and model building. As an adult, my time is more limited, but I’ve continued to jealousy models of all kinds. Some years ago, I stumbled upon a new twist on an old hobby: paper models you may download from the Internet. You’ve probably seen those architectural paper models in the bookstore that only require cutting out and gluing together. This conception has come into the computer age. Now, there are innumerable paper models available on the web as graphic files. You plainly download the file and print out the pages on your color ink jet printer. Then it’s just a matter of cutting out the pieces and assembling your model. Even better, most of these models are free!

Why Paper?

Don’t think these models are like flimsy paper dolls or unrealistic and boxy. A few are, but most of them are cleverly designed and a joy to behold when completed. Some will have your friends scratching their heads in disbelief when you tell them their paper. I like the fact that their light weight makes suspending even larger aircraft models from the ceiling easy.

Building a card model has a good deal of vantages over conventional model building I like. I love that they are don’t require painting and may be assembled with mutual white glue. If you mess up a part, you may replace it without apparent effort by just printing out the page again.

What sort of models may you download free from the web? Because card models go straight from the architect to the builder, the range of subjects is much more outstanding than it is for production models. You may find card models (as builders call them) depicting all sorts of vehicles, buildings, and even animals. Movie and TV subjects are amongst the most popular. You may find free models of the Disneyland Sleeping Beauty Castle, the Graf Zepplin, the starship Enterprise (all versions), or a grand sailing ship.

Where Do You Find them?

Once you start out looking, you will find card models everywhere. Here are a great deal of tips to start: Doing a Google search of a subject with “paper model” on the line will almost always tell if it’s available online. There are a few outstanding link web sites and a heap of web sites full of in a professional manner designed models, such as Canon Creative Park. There’s a great forum called the Zealot Hobby Forum (http://www.zealot.com/forum/) full of model links, reviews and advice. Another good trick is to use the Google Reader RSS reader. In Reader, click the “Add a subscription” button and type in “paper model”. Cull through the feeds and subscribe to them. This way, you’ll be up on galore new models that have just been posted.

Formats

Most paper model downloads are available as PDF files, which may be viewed and printed using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader or galore other reader such as Foxit Reader (which I like). These normally offer all model files in a single multipage file. Usually, the author includes directions, too, even though with downloads, now and again you have to do a lot of interpretation. Otherwise, a model may be a folder of JPG graphic files, effortlessly printed from any graphic viewer. Rarely, a model will be offered in the PDO format, which may only be viewed and printed after installing the Pepakura Viewer. Pepakura is a program employed by a lot of designers to construct card models.

Printing

Card models are best printed using a good high solution color ink jet printer. Laser printers are not very good for model printing because they deposit powdered toner on the page which have a tendancy to crumble when bent.

Tools

Building a paper model does not require any particular tools. Have a bench or table someplace where you may leave an in-progress model out of harms way for the duration of assembly. You may cut out model pieces with scissors, but it’s best to go by the craft shop and pick up one of those plastic cutting mats. a 12 inch by 12 inch mat is fine. A good X-Acto knife is best, too. If you don’t want white paper edges showing on your model, there are a couple of ways to fix that. You may use a set of colored pencils or markers to conservatively color just the edge. I prefer watercolors for this, so I may thin the color to a shade closer to that of the printed surface. Any kid’s watercolor set will do, but it helps to pick up a very fine brush for this. Any white PVA glue will do. I use Alene’s Tacky Glue, but Elmer’s and others work fine. For gluing little parts, I use toothpicks: the flat sided type. Q-Tips are good for gluing more spectacular areas. Pick up a metal ruler for cutting straight line edges. If you’ve never done this, exercise a bit before attempting it on your model page. Another good thing to have is a may of spray-on fixative or varnish to set the water-based inks on the page before assembly.

There are free paper model downloads that may be collected in a few minutes and others that may take weeks. Try one. Paper modeling may not replace plastic modeling, but it may be a fun variation of your model-building routine.

Wegner
These markers are worth every penny. They work more like paint than markers. They blend easily, and give pictures a rich, vibrant color. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to seriously color their artwork. Someone who just wants to color their art and doesn’t need something of a very high quality would be better off buying something cheaper, however, as these are professional quality (and price) markers.

The markers come in a durable storage box.

This set contains the most basic colors possible, with little deviation. The problem omissions are mostly lack of any skin colors or greys, as well as the fact that the yellow included is a rather weak color as yellows go.
However, if you’re just beginning, this is a good start. Each new marker you buy will cost you about five dollars, so think ahead about what you’re willing to spend.

Stillman
Copic markers are the highest quality marker on the market. They are popular with both the manga artists in Japan and artists in America. Copic markers are not for the beginner, but rather for more experienced artist wishing to get into some new high quality materials. Colors are limited in this set, but this set is a good place to start.
Colors created by Copic markers are spectacular, but before forewarned they very ink heavy and will bleed though your average paper.
COPIC Set of 12 Sketch Markers

Introduction

The test of a good filing scheme is being capable to find something when you need it, no matter of how you choose to coordinate it. However, there are two basic approaches to setting up a filing system:

· Establish categories for like items by subject (e.g., Hobbies)

· Establish an index based system with files identified numerically by item (e.g., File 1=Document 1)

You may choose the method that makes the most intuitive sense to you. People who have disturb categorizing may feel more comfortable with the indexing approach. Regardless of which type of system you choose, if you feel overwhelmed in regards to where to start, pick a group of papers in any pile. It does not matter where you start…..you just need to begin with a manageable subset of paper.

Active files are those which you must access regularly. Historic files are those that it is improbable you will need to access, but which you ought to keep for record retention purposes (i.e., tax files). Your inactive files must not be kept in your active file space, if file cabinet space is limited. These files may be stored in boxes in an out of the way emplacement (since you will have to not be accessing these files regularly). To create your active files, follow the steps outlined below.

Organizing By Category

Step 1 Sort & Discard

Review your papers and discard any papers you no longer need to keep. If you feel unsure when it comes to discarding an item, in order to make the decision easier, ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could take place if you throw it away? It helps to put things in perspective.

When you determine to keep a paper, sort the paper into respective categories/piles. Use post-it notes to label the top page of each pile until a permanent file location/category name is established later.

Use categories that are wide for sorting. For example, if you have lots of data on respective leisure interests, you may fabricate a hanging file called “Leisure” (vs. creating a hanging file for each type of leisure topic in your papers).

If you have a major sideline such as photography, for which you gather a lot of information, give rise to a discerned hanging folder named “Photography”. This makes more sense (so that the “leisure” file won’t become too unwieldy).

You may give rise to multiple interior file folders that reside within the hanging file folder, each labeled with the category sub-topic. This makes it having little impact to search by sub-topic. For example, within the “Leisure” hanging file category you might have file folders for the sub-categories of Art, Music & Reading.

Step 2: Determine Quantity Files Needed

Once you are finished sorting, count and double check the number of “piles” you have to keep. The number of piles equals the number of hanging file folders you will need for your active files. You must buy a minimum of the same number of interior file folders to insert inside the hanging file folders (more if you will have galore categories with multiple sub-topics).

Step 3: Identifying/Labeling the Files

Create a set of hanging file folders and related interior file folder(s) for each pile and it is sub-categories.

In order to maintain the transition from active to historic status at the end of each year, the interior files must be labeled by subject and current year (e.g., Life Insurance 2004). This dating approach is best for those categories that implicate on a monthly basis affirmations or bills.

For your hanging folders that do incorporate dated material, it is best to keep static papers that don’t change from year to year in front of the interior folders (e.g., the life insurance policy versus the quarterly invoices). This will make it easy to transition files from active to historical status at year end.

Step 4: Estimate file cabinet size

Once you put the suitable papers in the files, you may get a sense of how a good deal of file cabinet drawers you will need. Using a single “Bankers Box” (heavy corrugated storage box) to stand the files up to measure the inches in depth necessitated is very helpful. These boxes are available at office supply stores, and likewise will serve later for inactive storage purposes).

The total number of depth inches you have equates to the number of file

drawers you will need in the file cabinet. Be sure to measure the depth of any file cabinet drawers you may be thinking of buying to see to it you’ll have sufficient space (allowing at least 4 inches in each drawer’s clearance for sliding & observing files.

Maintaining the System Annually

At the end of the year, transfer the past year’s interior files to inactive storage. Keep the same hanging file folder in place, and fabricate a new set of interior file folders labeled with the New Year. Keep the “static materials inside the hanging file folders from the past year.

Index Based Organizing

Step 1: Discard & Pile

Review your papers and discard any papers you no longer need to keep. For the papers you need to keep, sort your papers into a single pile (no need to categorize).

Step 2: Create the File Index

For each one of these papers or related group of papers (if that kinship is very evident to you), you will give rise to a numerical file. You will then record File #1′s contents in an excel log (or other computerized tool) that describes the contents of the file. For example, if I have a utility bill from March 2004, you would make the description “March 2004 Utility Bill”. This file description will get assigned a random file number in a pre-identified emplacement (i.e., File #1 in the office filing cabinet). Should you ever need to find this bill again, you would do an Edit/Find search in Excel and enter “March 2004 utility” to find it. The vantage of this approach is it does not rely on categorizing. When your May 2004 bill arrives, you may assign a exclusively unrelated file # to it.

You may invent & record these indexes with Excel or Access by using their search capabilities. There is also a software program called “The Paper Tiger” from The Hemphill Productivity Institute that is designed for this purpose, and it adds a heap of nice bells and whistles (like tracking files that have been pulled out but not put back). There is a free trial offer and tele-class if you are mesmerized (information may be found at their website http://www.thepapertiger.com/.).

The major disfavor of the indexing approach is that you will have to maintain galore more files in your storage unit, as well as the info base to track them.

Other Filing Tips

· You ought to have “action” folders for bills to pay, things to do and pending matters. This serves as a keeping place for things you have not had time to get to that week, but that still require action on your part. It is likewise helpful to have a calendar file to keep things necessitated for events already recorded in your calendar (e.g., directions to event, handouts, etc.)

· You may use color coded folders to visually distinguish subject categories

· You may alphabetize your file folders by hanging folder tab name, but if you use staggered file tabs, you’ll have to redo the order each time you add or delete a subject.

· Pendaflex, a leading manufacturer recommends that files ought to be no more than ¾” thick. If you need a file with a more outstanding thickness, you may use the “box bottom” hanging folders.

It easily holds 48 large spools of thread. One of the better qualities is that the matching bobbin can be placed in the same divider. A small spool of thread can be placed in the same divider as a large spool, increasing the number of spools the organizer will hold. The colors can be viewed through the sides before opening the organizer, so arranging by color groups saves time when looking for a specific color. The handle makes the organizer easy to grab and since each side is secure, thread does not spill out when one side is opened. My only complaint is that one of the organizers was damaged during shipping. However, this is not a problem with the product, only the vendor.

I wanted to exchange it because I liked the case but the seller wanted me to pay for it. I would have rated this higher had the seller been willing to do an exchange without extra cost to me. It could have been a fluke that I got a defective one but I will never know. I would not buy from this seller again.

As a kid, I expended innumerable hours building plastic model kits and have always loved models and model building. As an adult, my time is more limited, but I’ve continued to jealousy models of all kinds. Some years ago, I stumbled upon a new twist on an old hobby: paper models you may download from the Internet. You’ve in all probability seen those architectural paper models in the bookstore that only require cutting out and gluing together.

I like the fact that their light weight makes suspending even more spectacular aircraft models from the ceiling easy.

Building a card model has a heap of vantages over traditionalisti model building I like. I love that they are don’t require painting and may be accumulated with mutual white glue. If you mess up a part, you may replace it effortlessly by just printing out the page again.

Once you commence looking, you will find card models everywhere. Here are a lot of tips to start: Doing a Google search of a subject with “paper model” on the line will almost always tell if it’s available online. There are a few great link internet sites and a good deal of internet sites full of in a professional manner designed models, such as Canon Creative Park. This way, you’ll be up on a heap of new models that have just been posted.

Formats

Most paper model downloads are available as PDF files, which may be viewed and printed using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader or a heap of other reader such as Foxit Reader (which I like). These ordinarily offer all model files in a single multipage file. Usually, the author includes directions, too, even though with downloads, occasionally you have to do a great deal of interpretation. Otherwise, a model may be a folder of JPG graphic files, effortlessly printed from any graphic viewer. Rarely, a model will be offered in the PDO format, which may only be viewed and printed after installing the Pepakura Viewer. Pepakura is a program applied by a great deal of designers to construct card models.

Q-Tips are good for gluing more prominent areas.

Introduction

The test of a good filing system is being capable to find something when you need it, disregarding of how you choose to coordinate it. However, there are two basic approaches to setting up a filing system:

· Establish categories for like items by subject (e.g., Hobbies)

· Establish an index based scheme with files identified numerically by item (e.g., File 1=Document 1)

You may choose the method that makes the most intuitive sense to you. People who have disturb categorizing may feel more comfortable with the indexing approach. Regardless of which type of scheme you choose, if you feel overwhelmed with regards to where to start, pick a group of papers in any pile. It does not matter where you start…..you just need to get started with a manageable subset of paper.

Active files are those which you must access regularly. Historic files are those that it is improbable you will need to access, but which you will have to keep for record retention purposes (i.e., tax files). Your inactive files will have to not be kept in your active file space, if file cabinet space is limited. These files may be stored in boxes in an out of the way emplacement (since you will have to not be accessing these files regularly). To create your active files, follow the steps outlined below.

Organizing By Category

Step 1 Sort & Discard

Review your papers and discard any papers you no longer need to keep. If you feel unsure regarding discarding an item, in order to make the decision easier, ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could take place if you throw it away? It helps to put things in perspective.

When you determine to keep a paper, sort the paper into respective categories/piles. Use post-it notes to label the top page of each pile until a permanent file location/category name is established later.

Use categories that are wide for sorting. For example, if you have a large total of selective information on respective leisure interests, you may manufacture a hanging file called “Leisure” (vs. creating a hanging file for each type of leisure topic in your papers).

If you have a major sideline such as photography, for which you gather a lot of information, manufacture a distinguished hanging folder named “Photography”. This makes more sense (so that the “leisure” file won’t become too unwieldy).

You may manufacture multiple interior file folders that reside within the hanging file folder, each labeled with the category sub-topic. This makes it requiring little effort to search by sub-topic.

You must buy a minimum of the same number of interior file folders to insert inside the hanging file folders (more if you will have a great deal of categories with multiple sub-topics).

This dating approach is best for those categories that implicate regularly every month affirmations or bills.

For your hanging folders that do comprise dated material, it is best to keep static papers that don’t modify from year to year in front of the interior folders (e.g., the life insurance policy versus the quarterly invoices). This will make it easy to transition files from active to historical status at year end.

Step 4: Estimate file cabinet size

Once you put the suitable papers in the files, you may get a sense of how some file cabinet drawers you will need.

Keep the same hanging file folder in place, and create a new set of interior file folders labeled with the New Year.

For each one of these papers or affiliated group of papers (if that kinship is very evident to you), you will develop a numerical file. When your May 2004 bill arrives, you may assign a totally unrelated file # to it.

You may develop & record these indexes with Excel or Access by using their search capabilities. There is likewise a software program called “The Paper Tiger” from The Hemphill Productivity Institute that is designed for this purpose, and it adds a great deal of nice bells and whistles (like tracking files that have been pulled out but not put back). There is a free trial offer and tele-class if you are mesmerized (information may be found at their website http://www.thepapertiger.com/.).

The major disfavor of the indexing approach is that you ought to maintain a good deal of more files in your storage unit, as well as the selective information base to track them.

· You may use color coded folders to visually tell apart subject categories

· You may alphabetize your file folders by hanging folder tab name, but if you use staggered file tabs, you’ll have to redo the order each time you add or delete a subject.

· Pendaflex, a leading manufacturer recommends that files must be no more than ¾” thick. If you need a file with a more outstanding thickness, you may use the “box bottom” hanging folders.

For numerous years persons have asked me what is the most indispensable thing to consider when getting an artist. They ordinarily suppose me to answer in esoteric terms and are rather amazed when my answer is in truth a practical one. The answer is tools.

As crazy as it might seem, the right tools is more crucial than any aroused or spiritual influences in your art. Let’s face it, each project requires it is own tools. You wouldn’t replace the drywall in your house with automotive tools. You would want to make sure you had incisively the right tools to get precisely the results you wanted. The world of art is no different.

There are a large total of costly styles of art out there, but this is not one of them. Even the most highpriced materials are still rather cheap when you consider the end result. You may of course use any pencil lying around and any piece of paper that you may scrounge up, but let’s face it, you would not be happy with the results. I strongly give hope or courage to you to invest a few dollars on the best tools that you may find. I would commend attempting your local art stores like:

Michaels

Aaron Brothers

Hobby Lobby

Dick Blick

Utrecht

Your Subject

The initial tool that you ought to strive to acquire is an intimate noesis of your subject. Most humans might not consider this to be a tool, but in fact it is the most indispensable tool that you have available to you. It is necessary that you study your subject and spend time with them before you ever get started to construct your portrait. I have worked from photos of celebrities and have been capable to duplicate the photos somewhat well, but I do not know those celebrities. I have never expended time around them and learned what makes them laugh and what makes them cry. So, I was not competent to capture the essence of the subject. When I did a portrait of a very close friend, what I knew of her personality came through. When I looked at the finished work, I realized that it looked more like her than the introductory photo did.

Pencils

You will not get very far without a pencil, and it is very important that you choose the right pencils for your project. Graphite pencils are numbered from 9H to 9B. This determines the hardness of the pencil lead, with 9H being the most unmanageable and 9B being the softest. The harder the lead, the more precise detail you may achieve, but you will end up with lighter images. The softer leads will construct rich dark tones, but you will not get the fine detail that you may be wanting. At a heap of point you will want to invest in a full set of pencils and use multiple pencils in each drawing. But to be completely honest, I tend to use a 2B almost exclusively unless I need to add galore severe contrast to my finished piece.

Don’t skimp out! Pencils and your paper are the two most necessary items that you will be using. Go in front and splurge the $1.25 that it takes to buy a good one.

Paper

There are way too numerous distinct features of paper to even commence touching the surface in this article. What I want to focus on is quality and finish. There are two essential finishes that you will want to work with at first: Cold Press and Hot Press. Cold press paper is invented by forcing the paper amongst two cold cylinders. The result is a paper with a bit of a texture to it. Hot press is just the opposite. The cylinders are hot, resulting in a much smoother finish. There are masters and cons to both of them but this is the basic gist. Cold press, or textured, paper will pull more graphite from your pencil resulting in darker and richer tones. However, the down side is that you will not be competent to get the same detail that you may get from the smooth surface of a hot pressed paper. I prefer to get as much detail as I can. Therefore I use a hot press. As you start out working with the medium you will determine for yourself what works best for each project.

I want to talk in regards to quality for a moment. A good quality paper will hold up very well. The pencil portrait technique that I use and instruct is finelooking brutal on the paper. A for less grade will not hold up as well and you will end up with the paper fibers genuinely breaking isolated and your paper starting to disintegrate. You may get a genuinely good pad of paper for anyplace among $7 and $15. Spend the money. You will be happy that you did. I tend to use a nice 100 lb Bristol vellum. However, I have been known to invest a little more in a hot press illustration board if I am doing work for hire.

Eraser

Everyone has their bestloved erasers. Most artists use a kneaded eraser, some use a gum eraser, I use a click eraser. Yup, the white erasers that they trade in the school supply isle for $1.50. It works just fine for me. The gain of a kneaded eraser is that you may knead it like play-do to invent fine tip points to lift out graphite to give rise to highlights. If you want to use one, by all means do so. They are fantasti for that purpose. I just never use them myself.

I have also been known to use a battery operated eraser. They may be very handy for adding highlights to hair or for heightening the light reflected from the eyes.

Tortillion

A tortillion is basically a tightly wound roll of paper that is used to blend graphite. It is actually the key to doing the style of art that I teach. Without this tool, you will never get the smooth gradations of tone that you need to get a photo-realistic look. The good news is that this is the most inexpensive of all of your tools. You may ordinarily get various in a package for around a dollar.

Pencil Sharpener

What pencil sharpener you use is exclusively your choice. Just keep in mind that you will want a nice sharp lead for most of the work that you are doing. So, don’t skimp out too cheaply. If you go with an electric one, you will want to invest in one that has cutting gears as opposed to blade cutters. They are a little pricier, but provide a much nicer and sharper point than the blade sharpeners do.

Conclusion

That is actually all that you need for creating photo realistic works of art. I work largely with portraits, but the same tools are used no matter what you are subject is. As you may see, this is one of the least pricey forms of art to get into. For around $15 you may get all of the furnishes you need to do assorted works of art, and once you learn the techniques, you will have humans knocking down your door wanting you to construct for them.
